Belgian chocolate is one of the most popular types of chocolate we sell and is famous world-wide for its delicious, creamy taste. Nothing beats the taste and quality of Belgian chocolate and that’s why the centres of all our chocolate Christmas trees are made from 100% Belgian chocolate! But how did this sweet treat become so popular over the centuries and make its way to the UK?
A Brief History of Belgian Chocolate
Chocolate was first made in South America. During this period, chocolate was considered a huge sign of luxury and was not commonly available. Instead it was only for the nobility to make hot chocolate so they could impress their visitors. In the 1600s, Belgium began producing chocolate and over time it became widely available. King Leopold the Third developed Belgium into the number one trader in chocolate worldwide. Today, there are over 2,000 chocolatiers in Belgium and their chocolate is world-renowned and plays an integral role in the Belgium economy.
Belgium’s Biggest Chocolate Competitor
The major of Zurich, Henri Escher, was served a cup of hot chocolate when he visited the Grand Palace of Brussels in 1697. He loved the drink immediately and ended up taking the recipe back home with home, introducing his country to chocolate for the first time. Since then, Switzerland has been considered Belgium’s biggest competitor in the chocolate industry.
What is Belgian Chocolate Made of?
To understand what it is that makes Belgian chocolates so famous and delicious, you need to know how they are made! The secret to the deliciousness of Belgian chocolate lies within the ingredients and the production process. So, Belgium works hard to use quality cocoa as they oversea how their cocoa beans are planted, roasted, and the quality of the beans being used.
Traditional Chocolatier Manufacturing is Preferred
There are several unspoken rules in the chocolate industry and one of these is that traditional manufacturing is definitely best. There are numerous independent chocolatiers throughout Belgium who work hard at hand-crafting irresistible chocolate treats.
Here at Sweet Tree by Browns, we work hard to handcraft every single one of our chocolate treats, just like traditional chocolatiers in Belgium. We believe this helps us provide beautiful and high-quality chocolate treats with a personal touch because we put time and effort into every chocolate treat we make!
