Why are Chocolate Buttons Round?
Many people wonder why chocolate buttons were made in the first place and why they were made to be round, instead of the traditional square or rectangular chocolate bar shapes. Charles Spence, a good sensory scientist, discovered that there is a relationship between our senses and the foods we eat. That is, we make consistent matches between the shapes of our foods and their tastes.
When it comes to chocolate, round shapes are often softer on the tongue and therefore easier to melt in the mouth, giving the impression that they taste sweeter. The sensory discovery is also why dark chocolate is sold in angular shapes, as it makes the chocolate bar taste increasingly bitter.
